Alena Compton, Music Teacher

astarr@odysseycharter.net
On a lovely evening in October, I was born in Emporia, Kansas, the first
girl after 5 energetic boys. I was born and raised in Kansas but my parents
both grew up in Utah. Music has been an important part of my family's
development and unity. All 10 of us play the violin among other instruments
and we're known back home for our family concerts and our family quartet
that plays for weddings.
I graduated from BYU in December of 2006 with a Music Specialist degree,
in truth, a dual major that certifies me to teach Music 1-8 and in the
elementary school classroom 1-6. I learned endurance and patience through
this long major that I hope to apply in my first year of teaching here at
Odyssey. Since graduating, I taught orchestra last winter in the Provo
District at three of the elementary schools working with 5th and
6th graders. During my student teaching, I worked at Wasatch
Elementary in Provo having the chance to conduct their 100 voice children's
choir and teach in their K-6 Kodaly Music Program that has now been going
for about 8 years. While at BYU, I toured with BYU Singers in the
Northeastern United States and Canada giving 26 concerts in about 4 weeks!
My instrument of focus was voice, high soprano, and I love to perform in
choirs and as a soloist. I have a special love for musical theater. I
especially relate with Millie from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,
because I'm 5 ft 1 inch, but spunky and full of energy.
I truly love all subjects in school, but language arts, history, and
music are at the top of that list. I love to cook, especially breads of all
sorts. Desserts are divine, especially chocolate mint ice cream! Going to
Europe this summer to see Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany was the
most exciting traveling I've done. To write poetry or a symphony, I would
spend a week in Halstatt, Austria with its glacial lakes tucked within cloud
laced mountains. The books I love could fill this entire page! Most of all
I love Jane Eyre, Harry Potter, The Hero and the Crown, The Blue Sword, and
The Witch of Blackbird Pond.
Education is where I've decided to nest my life's work. Performing is
sparkling and enlivening, but in teaching I find a softer glow that is
lasting and constantly challenging to maintain. I love working with people,
trying to know them for the best that they are, and encouraging that in
them. Music has been a way of transcending the dust of every day life for
me and it has so many facets and flavors in its ability to connect with
people. Put the two together, and I want to be a teacher who knows her
students personally and helps them to discover how music can enhance their
joy in life.
