Benefits to K-8 Schooling
We are excited about the anticipated opening of our 7th grade, Fall
2006 and 8th grade Fall 2007. Studies have shown in Philadelphia, Milwaukee and New York City that students who attend K-8 schools score higher on their SAT-9 scores and state required tests in reading, math and science than compared to junior high schools. At Odyssey Charter School (7th and 8th grade), the curriculum for your child will meet or exceed both the Utah State Board of Education and the Alpine School District requirements for these grades. In addition there will be a mandatory two year instruction in Latin (or a romance language ) for reasons stated in "The Well-Trained Mind," by Susan Wise Bauer pages 190-197.
The non-curricular benefits of a K-8 school have been written about in multiple studies and newspaper articles. One of the more recent articles written in the Deseret News by Marjorie Cortez, October 25, 2005, identified several benefits to a K-8 school that have been listed in several studies: Reduced aggression and disciplinary problems, older students helping younger students. Keith Look, a researcher with the Philadelphia Education Fund, found that, "Students in the K-8 school show a higher self-esteem, less victimization by other students and a healthier adolescent development." What an opportunity we have to give our children this chance to learn in an environment that will increase their prospects for success. We look forward with you to this next outstanding phase in the development of our childrens' education at the Odyssey Charter School.
