Legal Requirements for Charter School Admissions
The Lottery
OCS will not discriminate against any applicant or employee because of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, or disability. OCS is required to accept all students who submit an application within our published Open Enrollment Period. However, if a particular grade level is filled beyond capacity at the end of that period, all the timely applicants are entered into a lottery that will select them for admission randomly. Sibling preference will be granted when applicable, however, all siblings are not automatically enrolled if one sibling is accepted. According to law, children with founder preferences are admitted independent of the lottery. Reasonable effort has been made to ensure that the lottery procedure follows government regulations and is equitable.
OCS will notify parents in writing with the results of the first lottery. If a student is not offered enrollment at that time, the student will receive a ranking number to be on the wait list. If there is a second lottery, those students will be ranked after the students on the wait list from the first lottery. Subsequent lotteries will be held only when openings become available.
To accept an offered position, parents must then return a completed "Acceptance of Enrollment" form that must be postmarked within 14 days of mailing and attend a Parent Registration Meeting to complete required forms. If we do not receive these completed registration materials within the required time period, that student's position will be filled by the next eligible applicant. OCS cannot be responsible for undelivered US mail or email.
Grade Level Capacity
All grades (K through 8) will eventually have two classrooms with a total of 50 students per grade. In response to high demand, the 2005-2006 school year will have three 1st grade classrooms (total 75 students). 7th grade (total 50 students) will be added the second year (2006-2007) and 8th grade (total 50 students) will be added the third year (2007-2008).
Sibling Preference
Because of applicable state and federal laws, families who wish to enroll more than one student cannot be guaranteed that all their children will be admitted concurrently. The basic procedure is: if one child in a family is admitted and another (or others) is not, the remaining sibling(s) will be admitted as soon as a position is available in their grade level. OCS has a great interest in keeping families together and will do all in its legal power to do so.
Founder Preference
Founders are those who have contributed significant and essential effort to the development of the school. Children whose parents are OCS founders receive first priority in admissions. Not more than ten percent of the OCS student body will be students who have been admitted with Founder Preference.
