I grew up in Rexburg, ID as the youngest of four children. At the age of five I began piano lessons and, though I often complained quite profusely about being required to practice, music became a part of my life. Upon entering 6th grade I enrolled in beginning band at my middle school. I had known for quite some time that I wanted to play the trumpet (I didn't even know until then that my dad had been a trumpet player. Perhaps it was in my blood.)
I loved playing trumpet and making good friends in band. By the end of 9th grade I had decided I wanted to major in music and planned to be a band teacher. I wanted to bring to others the joy that music had brought to me. Throughout high school I was involved in just about all of the instrumental ensembles available at my school. I also was involved as a marching member in the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps for one year and the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps for two years throughout my high school years. Through drum corps I traveled all across the United States for three summers and even got to march in the Inaugural Parade for President George W. Bush in 2001. I especially enjoyed time spent in Washington D.C. and at Niagara Falls, each of which I have visited twice. I attended BYU as a music major and decided as a freshman that Elementary Music was my true calling. This decision took me on a route I had not foreseen for myself, as a double major was required for Elementary Music, and I ended up graduating dual certified with a Bachelor of Music degree as well as my elementary classroom teaching certificate. Since graduating BYU in 2007 I have taught two years as the music specialist at Amelia Earhart Elementary in Provo District and have been furthering my music education by working towards my Kodaly Certification, having completed the second of three years this summer. I love teaching music and all the unique challenges it presents. I still love playing trumpet and play in a community orchestra in Spanish Fork. I recently read, and greatly enjoyed, the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini (Eragon, Eldest, and Brisinger). I love really good food and chocolate baked goods. And I love spending time with my husband, Daniel, and my little girl, Anna, who will be two this December. |
