I decided to be a teacher at age eight in 2nd grade. I loved my 2nd grade teacher and wanted to be just like her. From then on I planned my education around my goal of becoming a teacher; I never changed my mind. In high school I was a teacher’s aid in a 2nd grade classroom, and I volunteered at the local library to read stories to children. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Teaching English as a Second Language. After teaching 2nd grade for four years and Kindergarten for three years in Idaho, I went back to school at California State University at Long Beach, where I originally grew up, to get my Early Childhood Credential. I then moved to Washington with my little daughter and taught Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grades for the next sixteen years while raising my daughter. During this time I also got my Master’s degree in Creative Arts in Learning. I love doing Art with children—though I am definitely not an artist.
I love teaching and learning about everything. I read constantly (especially children’s literature) and seem to collect books as one of my hobbies. One of my favorite things to read about is dinosaurs. I have been to a dig and even have some real dinosaur bones. My favorite book in first grade was Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag. In second grade I loved King of the Wind. My current favorite children’s books are One Smile and Heart of a Tiger which I can hardly wait to share with your children in my class. One of my favorite classics is David Copperfield which my Dad encouraged me to read; I enjoyed it immensely.
Some of my other favorite things to do are walk on the beach (in Oregon with my daughter), play in my rose garden or my vegetable garden, can the peaches and apricots off of my fruit trees, walk my two dogs, brush one of my five very hairy cats, or play with my retired horse. (We did Hunter jumping in his younger days.) |
