Land Trust Committee

What is the School LAND Trust Program?

"There are 3.3 million acres of school trust lands in Utah granted at statehood to support schools. These lands generate revenue, all of which is saved in the permanent State School Fund. This fund is invested and the interest and dividends are distributed to every public school in the state through the School LAND Trust Program. School Community Councils prepare plans, approved by local school boards, that identify an academic need and a proposed solution using the annual dividend."

School LAND Trust Funds at Odyssey:

Odysey's School LAND Trust Committee, which includes staff and parents of Odyssey Charter School, meets regularly each year to discuss and determine usage of LAND Trust Funds for OCS. Each school year the LAND Trust Program provides roughly $15,000-$20,000 to OCS. This is a valuable and much-needed resource for Odyssey! Here's a brief summary of what the LAND Trust Funds have enabled OCS to achieve during the last few years. If you are interested in being a part of the LAND Trust Fund Committee, elections for the 2010-2011 year are approaching! Contact Russell Schellhous for more information or email biz_manager@odysseycharter.net

2009-2010

Purchasing of novels for Reading.

OCS is very limited in its supply of novels for reading classes. Currently some teachers have only a few copies of the books they would like their students to read. With LAND Trust funds we will be able to expand our collection of novels, ensuring that there are enough copies for whole classes, and following Core Knowledge sequences. It is hoped that as students experience novels in a classroom environment, they will enjoy reading and be introduced to a variety of subjects through the novels. Examples of some novel titles are: Alice in Wonderland, Sign of the Beaver, Witch of Blackbird Pond, Matilda, Charlotte Doyle, Tom Sawyer, Roll of Thunder, etc.

Math manipulative kits to enhance and expand Math instruction.

Beginning this year, OCS has moved all grades to the Saxon curriculum. With LAND Trust Funds Odyssey will be able to purchase math manipulative kits specifically designed for Saxon instruction. These math manipulatives will create hands-on learning opportunities for students. For example, children in the younger grades will be able to learn to count money using counting games. Manipulative kits include: clocks, blocks, geoboards with geobands, tangrams, rulers, linking cubes, etc.

2008-2009

Science Lab Creation
To address lower Science scores, the LAND Trust funds were dedicated to the creation of a Science Lab which is upstairs. A teacher/lab desk was purchased and set-up for better instruction in science. Desks were purchased as well for students in the room.

Science Instruction Supplies
A teacher microscope was purchased with LAND Trust Funds which has the added abilitiy of being able to project what is being studied onto a screen so all the students in the room can see. For example, this year Mr. Youngberg was able to take a drop of blood onto a slide under the miscroscope and then project that image onto the screen so all the students in the room were able to see the cells inside that drop of blood.

        2007-2008

                    Music Instruction Supplies/Instruments
To enhance the Kodaly Music Program, LAND Trust Funds were used to purchase instruments and other music supplies.

Core Knowledge Curriculum
Odyssey's goal of becoming a Core Knowledge School required investment in training, workshops, supplies, etc.  School LAND Trust Funds were used to further Odyssey's Core Knowledge School requirements.
