After-School Band

After-School Band: grades 4 - 8

More Band information at Ms. Perkins’ UEN page: http://my.uen.org/myuen/104230/8

-The Odyssey Wind Band is a beginning band program, no previous instrumental training is needed. We will be teaching your child how to play the instruments.

-The purpose of the group is to provide students a means to further their musical learning by applying skills learned in music class to the playing of an instrument, in a performance oriented setting. The program will prepare students for involvement in high school instrumental ensembles, such as marching and concert bands.

-Instruction provided will be aligned with skills learned in the Kodaly music program taught by Ms. Perkins in regular music classes. Again, no prior instrument knowledge is necessary.

-The band will work towards two performances: one in the Winter (prior to winter break) and one in the Spring.

-Rehearsals will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 in the OCS Music Room. If we receive a plethora of students interested in joining, we may need to hold rehearsals on additional days (Monday, Friday, or both). If additional rehearsal days are added, your child will still attend only two days each week.

-Forms and term-specific information are available at Ms. Perkins’ UEN page: http://my.uen.org/myuen/104230

-Parents are responsible for providing an instrument (in working order) for your child and maintaining it as needed. Instruments can be rented or purchased from a variety of sources: local music stores, including Summerhays, Bert Murdock, or Riverton music, or from online retailers (for purchase). Ms. Perkins' recommendation, from personal experience of renting from them, is Summerhays Music, but the decision is yours. If you have an instrument sitting around, take it to a music store and have it checked over to ensure it is in good working order, and then pass it on to your new instrumentalist.

-We are limit the numbers and age of band members only on saxophone and percussion. For these instruments, 6th grade or higher, first come, first served. Papers need to be turned in as soon as possible. Percussionists preferably have had piano experience and are subject to teacher approval.  If your child is not yet in sixth grade but would like to play saxophone, we recommend they begin on clarinet and can later switch to saxophone.

-Since it is an after-school program, band is not funded by the school. Band dues should be paid at the front desk and receipts shown to Ms. Perkins after payment is made. Dues can be paid as one lump sum of $150, paid as two $75 payments, or broken down into smaller chunks if necessary. Band dues go towards the payment of the directors for their time and knowledge, the purchase of performance music, and the purchase of large instruments to be owned by the school.

-Meet the band club directors:

Ms. Perkins has a Bachelor of Music degree from BYU and is the music teacher and choir director at Odyssey. She plays trumpet primarily, as well as piano, french horn, some clarinet, and some percussion. She has performed with concert, jazz, and marching bands, symphony orchestras, and brass choirs/quintets throughout high school, college, and post-graduation. She also marched 3 years in prestigious Drum and Bugle Corps groups.

Mr. Otterstrom plays tuba and trombone primarily, as well as trumpet, flute, and clarinet. He played tuba in concert and marching bands, and symphony orchestras in high school and college. He has taught after-school  band programs for the last four years in Jordan School District. He is currently working as an instructor at Odyssey and finishing his Elementary Education degree.
