Odyssey’s Concert Choir rehearses before school, 7:25-8:05, on Tuesdays and Fridays with additional Thursday rehearsals in the weeks immediately before each concert. The concert choir is open to all interested 4th-8th graders and serves as an important part of the Kodaly music program. The purpose of the choir is to provide advanced music students and students with a love for music and singing an opportunity to expand upon and apply the skills and knowledge gained in regular music class in a performance oriented environment. Choir members develop greater fluency in sol-fa and music reading, become competent with part-singing in a variety of forms and structures, expand their repertoire of learned songs, and develop ear-training and tonal independence—helping them become true musicians. The choral literature performed is based upon Zoltan Kodály’s belief that “only the best is good enough for a child”. In our choir we strive to learn the best of available choral literature for developing voices. Many of our pieces are folk songs and folk song arrangements, as well as rounds and canons from all time periods of music. Most importantly choir is an opportunity for students to have fun, make friends, and find joy in the singing and performing of truly great music. As Jenö Ádám, a prominent colleague of Kodály, stated, "The most important thing is to actualize the instinctive love of the child for singing and playing, to realize the changing of his moods through the songs, his feelings, his experiences - in other words, to bring about the miracle of music". of Kodály also said, "Teach music and singing at school in such a way that it is not a torture, but a joy for the pupil; instill a thirst for finer music in him, a thirst which will last for a lifetime.” This is what we strive for in our choir and in all of the music classes at Odyssey. Mrs. Perkins is the director of the choir. She has sung in several adult choirs and has trained in choral conducting in college and as part of her training for her Kodály Certification. She has worked with the Spring Creek Concert Choir in Provo, the Amelia Earhart School Choir, and an Amelia Earhart 3rd Grade Chorus which she founded and directed. |
