Hi, I’m Chrys McCumber, and I’m so excited to be teaching 5th grade at Odyssey Charter School! I love our school and our amazing Voyagers. I feel so blessed to be part of such a wonderful school community. I was honored to be named Odyssey’s 2024 Teacher of the Year, and I truly love creating a classroom where every child feels safe, seen, encouraged, and deeply valued.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in K–8 Education, a Master’s degree in Special Education, and a Montessori certification. These experiences have helped shape my love for personalized learning, student agency, and building strong, inclusive classroom communities where every learner can grow and shine.

As Miss Frizzle says, I encourage my students to “take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!” Learning is an adventure, and I want my classroom to be a place where students feel brave enough to explore, ask questions, try new things, and discover just how capable they really are.

I am passionate about preparing students not only for tests and grades, but for life. I want my students to become thoughtful, kind, curious, and compassionate people who care about others, contribute to their communities, and connect with the world around them.

Outside of the classroom, I love traveling, learning about people and their stories, spending time with my family, reading, and caring for animals. I am also a proud patriot, and I believe in helping students honor their roots while also expanding their reach as global learners and leaders.

I can’t wait for a year full of learning, laughter, growth, and adventure in 5th grade!
