LANGUAGE ARTS at ODYSSEY CHARTER SCHOOL

CKLA is grounded in the science of reading and time-tested instructional practices, ensuring students develop both strong decoding skills and deep comprehension.

At Odyssey Charter School, our Language Arts program is built on the belief that strong readers and writers are developed through intentional, knowledge-rich instruction.  We use Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), a research-based program that systematically builds reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills-while fostering a deep love of learning.

Students learn how language works and why it matters. Through rich texts, purposeful writing, and meaningful discussion, students become confident readers who comprehend complex ideas and express themselves clearly.

What Makes Our Language Arts Program Stand Out?

Knowledge-Rich Reading

Students don't just practice reading skills-they build background knowledge across history, science, and literature, which strengthens comprehension and critical thinking.

Strong Foundations in Literacy

From phonics and spelling in the early grades to advanced grammar, writing, and analysis in upper grades, instruction is systematic, structured, and cumulative.

Writing with Purpose

Students regularly write to explain, narrate, and persuade, developing clarity, organization, and confidence in their written communication.

Active, Engaged Learners

Lessons are interactive and purposeful. Students understand the why behind their learning and actively participate in discussions, reading, and writing tasks.

Support for Every Learner

Daily assessment and responsive instruction allows teachers to meet students where they are-supporting emerging readers, extending learning for advanced students, and providing targeted support as needed.
